“The human being is not born to solve the problems of the universe, but to find out where the problem begins, and then to restrain himself within the limits of the comprehensible.” — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Book One
Wilhelm Meister, a young merchant’s son, dreams of becoming an actor and playwright, much to his father’s disapproval. He falls in love with Mariane, an actress, but their relationship ends when he mistakenly believes she has been unfaithful. Heartbroken, Wilhelm throws himself into business but remains drawn to the theater.
Book Two
Wilhelm joins a traveling theater troupe, where he meets the enigmatic Jarno and the mysterious Harper. He becomes infatuated with the actress Philine and forms a bond with Mignon, a strange and silent child. The troupe performs for a nobleman, Count C., but internal conflicts and financial troubles plague them.

Wilhelm’s theatrical ambitions deepen as he writes and directs plays. He rescues Mignon from abuse and takes her under his protection. The troupe encounters a secretive Society of the Tower, whose members observe Wilhelm’s development. He remains unaware of their influence.
