“A man’s happiness lies in conformity with the purpose of the universe.”

Chapter 1: The Sailor’s Return

Noboru, a 13-year-old boy, watches from his bedroom window as his widowed mother, Fusako, brings home Ryuji, a merchant sailor. Noboru is part of a secret gang of boys who reject adult morality. He observes Ryuji with fascination, seeing him as a heroic figure untouched by the corruption of land life.

Chapter 2: The Gang’s Philosophy

Noboru meets with his gang, led by the coldly rational Chief. They discuss their nihilistic worldview, believing adults are weak and society is a lie. They conduct grotesque “experiments” on animals to prove their superiority. Noboru shares his admiration for Ryuji, but the Chief warns against sentimentality.

Chapter 3: Ryuji’s Dilemma

Ryuji begins a relationship with Fusako while struggling with his identity. Though he once dreamed of glory at sea, he finds unexpected comfort in domestic life. Noboru watches their intimacy through a peephole, his initial admiration turning to disgust as Ryuji appears more human than heroic.

Chapter 4: The Betrayal

When Ryuji announces he’ll abandon the sea to marry Fusako and work in her import business, Noboru feels profoundly betrayed. The gang declares Ryuji must be punished for succumbing to bourgeois life. They plan to “restore” his dignity through a violent initiation rite.

Chapter 5: The Initiation

The boys drug Ryuji and take him to an abandoned warehouse. In a chilling ceremony, they dissect his worldview while he’s semi-conscious. The Chief proclaims they’re granting him the “honor” of becoming a true hero through death. The novel ends ambiguously as they prepare to kill him.
