“But man is not made for defeat,” he said. “A man can be destroyed but not defeated.”

Chapter 1

Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman, has gone eighty-four days without catching a fish. His young apprentice, Manolin, is forced by his parents to leave Santiago and work on a more successful boat. Despite this, Manolin remains devoted to the old man, bringing him food and keeping him company.

Chapter 2

Determined to break his unlucky streak, Santiago sets out alone in his small skiff far into the Gulf Stream. He hooks an enormous marlin, but the fish is too strong to pull in. The battle begins, with the marlin dragging the boat farther out to sea.

Chapter 3

For two days and nights, Santiago struggles against the marlin, enduring exhaustion, hunger, and pain. He admires the fish’s strength and dignity, calling it his brother. Finally, on the third day, he harpoons the marlin and lashes it to his boat.

Chapter 4

As Santiago sails back to shore, sharks are drawn to the marlin’s blood. He fights them off with his harpoon, knife, and oar, but they devour most of the fish. By the time he reaches the harbor, only the skeleton remains.

Chapter 5

Exhausted and wounded, Santiago returns to his shack and collapses. The next morning, Manolin finds him and vows to fish with him again. Other fishermen marvel at the marlin’s skeleton, recognizing Santiago’s extraordinary feat. The old man dreams of lions on the African coast.
