“One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.”

Book One: The Fellowship of the Ring

The story begins in the Shire, where the hobbit Frodo Baggins inherits a mysterious ring from his uncle Bilbo. The wizard Gandalf reveals it is the One Ring, forged by the Dark Lord Sauron to dominate Middle-earth. Frodo, accompanied by his friends Sam, Merry, and Pippin, flees the Shire to keep the Ring safe. They are pursued by Sauron’s servants, the Black Riders. After a perilous journey, they reach the elf haven of Rivendell, where a council decides the Ring must be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom in Mordor. A fellowship is formed to aid Frodo: Gandalf, Aragorn, Boromir, Legolas, Gimli, and the four hobbits.

Book Two: The Fellowship of the Ring

The Fellowship sets out but is forced to travel through the Mines of Moria, where Gandalf falls battling a Balrog. The group reaches Lothlórien, receiving gifts from the elf-queen Galadriel. Boromir, tempted by the Ring, tries to take it from Frodo, who decides to continue alone. Sam insists on joining him, while the rest of the Fellowship is scattered by an orc attack.

Book Three: The Two Towers

Merry and Pippin are captured by orcs but escape into Fangorn Forest, meeting the ancient Ents. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli track them and reunite with Gandalf, now returned as Gandalf the White. The group aids Rohan in defending Helm’s Deep against Saruman’s forces. Meanwhile, Frodo and Sam, guided by the treacherous Gollum, journey toward Mordor.

Book Four: The Two Towers

Gollum leads Frodo and Sam through the Dead Marshes and into Mordor. They are captured by Faramir, Boromir’s brother, but released when he realizes their quest. Gollum’s betrayal becomes evident as he plots to reclaim the Ring. The hobbits press on toward Mount Doom.

Book Five: The Return of the King

Aragorn, Gandalf, and their allies rally Gondor against Sauron’s armies in the epic Battle of the Pelennor Fields. Théoden of Rohan falls, and Éowyn slays the Witch-king. Aragorn claims his destiny as king. Meanwhile, Frodo and Sam, now in Mordor, struggle toward Mount Doom.

Book Six: The Return of the King

Gollum attacks Frodo at the edge of Mount Doom, biting off his finger to reclaim the Ring but falls into the lava, destroying it. Sauron is defeated. Aragorn is crowned king, and the hobbits return to the Shire, only to find it under the control of the tyrant Saruman. They lead a rebellion, restoring peace. Frodo, wounded by his journey, departs for the Undying Lands with Bilbo and Gandalf, leaving Sam to carry on his legacy.
