“This war, in which I played so ineffectual a part, has left me with memories that are mostly evil, and yet I do not wish that I had missed it.” — George Orwell, Homage to Catalonia

Chapter Summaries

Chapter 1

Orwell arrives in Barcelona in December 1936, joining the POUM (Workers’ Party of Marxist Unification) militia to fight against Franco’s fascist forces. He describes the revolutionary atmosphere in the city, where workers’ collectives have taken control, and class distinctions seem to have vanished.

Chapter 2

Orwell is sent to the Aragón front, where he experiences the harsh conditions of trench warfare. He details the boredom, cold, and lack of proper equipment, contrasting it with the idealism of the militias. Despite the hardships, he admires the camaraderie among the soldiers.

Chapter 3

Orwell describes the futility of the fighting on the Aragón front, where neither side makes significant advances. He reflects on the absurdity of war, including the poor training of soldiers and the occasional farcical skirmishes with the enemy.

Chapter 4

After months in the trenches, Orwell returns to Barcelona on leave. He finds the city changed—the revolutionary spirit is fading, and political tensions between anarchists, communists, and socialists are rising. The initial unity against fascism is crumbling.

Chapter 5

Orwell witnesses the May Days uprising in Barcelona (May 1937), where factions of the Republican side clash violently. The Soviet-backed communists suppress the anarchists and POUM, whom they accuse of being counter-revolutionary. Orwell narrowly escapes arrest.

Chapter 6

After the suppression of the POUM, Orwell returns to the front, now disillusioned. He is shot in the throat by a sniper and hospitalized. His recovery is slow, and he reflects on the senselessness of war and political betrayal.

Chapter 7

Orwell returns to Barcelona to find the POUM outlawed and his comrades imprisoned or executed. He goes into hiding before fleeing Spain with his wife. The book ends with his bitter reflections on propaganda, betrayal, and the failure of the revolution.
