“All the history of human life has been a struggle between wisdom and stupidity.” — Philip Pullman, His Dark Materials

Book One: Northern Lights (The Golden Compass)

Lyra Belacqua, a wild and curious girl, lives in Jordan College, Oxford, in a parallel world where human souls take the form of animal companions called dæmons. When children, including her friend Roger, begin disappearing, Lyra learns of the mysterious “Gobblers” and sets off to rescue them. She is given an alethiometer, a truth-telling device, and joins a group of Gyptians on their journey north. Along the way, she uncovers the horrifying experiments conducted by the Magisterium—the oppressive religious authority—on the stolen children, involving severing them from their dæmons. Lyra infiltrates a research station in the Arctic, rescues the children, and witnesses the death of her friend Roger at the hands of her own father, Lord Asriel, who uses the child’s energy to open a bridge to another world.

Book Two: The Subtle Knife

Lyra crosses into another world, Cittàgazze, where she meets Will Parry, a boy from our world searching for his missing father. Will discovers a knife that can cut windows between worlds, but its use attracts Specters—soul-eating creatures. Lyra and Will learn of Dust, a mysterious particle linked to consciousness, which the Magisterium seeks to destroy. They meet scholars and witches who reveal that Lyra is destined to play a crucial role in the cosmic struggle. Will’s father, an explorer, is killed, but before dying, he warns of a great war. The two children continue their journey, pursued by enemies, while Lyra’s dæmon, Pantalaimon, grows increasingly uneasy about her destiny.

Book Three: The Amber Spyglass

Lyra is captured by her mother, Mrs. Coulter, while Will searches for her with the help of allies, including the armored bear Iorek Byrnison and the rebel angel Xaphania. They enter the Land of the Dead, freeing trapped souls, including Roger’s. Lyra and Will discover that Dust is leaking from the universe due to the Magisterium’s actions. They also realize their love for each other, which helps restore Dust’s flow. However, the knife’s power is unstable, and all windows between worlds must be closed to prevent further destruction. In a heartbreaking farewell, Lyra and Will part ways, each returning to their own world, forever changed by their journey.
