“I am—or I was—one of those people who pride themselves on their willpower, on their ability to make a decision and stick to it.”

Part One

The novel opens with David, an American expatriate in Paris, reflecting on his past while awaiting the execution of his lover, Giovanni. He recounts his troubled relationship with his father, his engagement to Hella, and his initial encounters with Giovanni, a charismatic Italian bartender. David is drawn to Giovanni’s warmth and vulnerability, despite his own internalized homophobia.

Part Two

David moves into Giovanni’s cramped, chaotic room, where their relationship deepens. However, David struggles with his identity, torn between his love for Giovanni and societal expectations. Hella returns from Spain, forcing David to choose between a conventional life with her or an uncertain future with Giovanni.

Part Three

David abandons Giovanni, who spirals into despair and commits a violent crime, leading to his arrest and death sentence. Consumed by guilt, David reflects on his inability to accept love and his self-destructive choices. The novel ends with David still trapped in his emotional isolation.
