“It’s not that the world is full of mysteries. It’s just that we don’t know enough yet.”
Book One (April–June)
Aomame, a fitness instructor and assassin, exits a taxi on a Tokyo highway and descends an emergency staircase into a parallel 1984—now called “1Q84.” Meanwhile, Tengo, a math tutor and aspiring writer, rewrites a mysterious novella, Air Chrysalis, authored by the dyslexic 17-year-old Fuka-Eri. Their lives intertwine as they uncover a cult called “Sakigake,” whose leader communes with supernatural “Little People.”
Book Two (July–September)
Tengo learns Fuka-Eri is the runaway daughter of the cult’s leader. Aomame assassinates abusive men while sensing shifts in reality, like the appearance of two moons. Ushikawa, a grotesque private investigator, stalks both protagonists. Tengo’s editor, Komatsu, vanishes, deepening the mystery. Aomame realizes she’s being hunted for killing the cult leader.
Book Three (October–December)
Tengo searches for Aomame after discovering they shared a childhood connection. Aomame hides in a safe house, pregnant—possibly with Tengo’s “spiritual” child. The Little People weave an “air chrysalis,” hinting at alternate realities. Ushikawa’s murder reveals the cult’s reach. In the climax, Tengo and Aomame reunite and escape 1Q84 through a highway stairway, returning to the original 1984.
