“All for one, one for all!”
Chapter 1: The Young D’Artagnan Leaves Home
D’Artagnan, a poor but ambitious Gascon, leaves his home to join the Musketeers in Paris. His father gives him a letter of introduction to Monsieur de Tréville, the captain of the Musketeers, and an old horse. Along the way, he gets into a duel with a nobleman, Rochefort, who humiliates him by stealing his letter.
Chapter 2: Arrival in Paris
D’Artagnan reaches Paris and meets Monsieur de Tréville, who sympathizes with him but cannot grant him a place among the Musketeers without proving himself. While waiting, he offends three of the best Musketeers—Athos, Porthos, and Aramis—and challenges each to a duel.
Chapter 3: The Duel and a New Friendship
As D’Artagnan prepares to duel the three Musketeers, they are interrupted by Cardinal Richelieu’s guards, who try to arrest them for illegal dueling. D’Artagnan sides with the Musketeers, helping them defeat the guards. Impressed, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis accept him as a friend.
Chapter 4: The Queen’s Secret
The Musketeers learn that Queen Anne of Austria is secretly involved with the English Duke of Buckingham. Cardinal Richelieu, seeking to undermine the Queen, sets a trap by convincing King Louis XIII to host a ball where she must wear a set of diamond studs—gifts from Buckingham.
Chapter 5: The Mission to England
D’Artagnan and the Musketeers embark on a dangerous journey to retrieve the diamonds from Buckingham before the ball. They face ambushes from Richelieu’s agents, but D’Artagnan succeeds, saving the Queen’s honor and earning her gratitude.
Chapter 6: Milady de Winter
D’Artagnan falls in love with Constance Bonacieux, the Queen’s seamstress, but she is kidnapped. Meanwhile, he encounters the beautiful but treacherous Milady de Winter, a spy for Richelieu. Though initially infatuated, D’Artagnan soon learns of her dark past and murderous nature.
Chapter 7: The Musketeers’ Struggles
As political tensions rise, the Musketeers face increasing danger. Athos discovers Milady is actually his former wife, whom he believed dead. Porthos gets entangled in a wealthy widow’s schemes, while Aramis considers leaving the Musketeers for the priesthood.
Chapter 8: The Siege of La Rochelle
The Musketeers are sent to the siege of La Rochelle, a Protestant stronghold. Richelieu uses the war to further his schemes, including sending Milady to assassinate Buckingham. D’Artagnan and his friends uncover the plot but are unable to stop her in time.
Chapter 9: Milady’s Revenge
Milady, furious at D’Artagnan for thwarting her plans, seeks revenge. She poisons Constance and flees. The Musketeers, now fully aware of her crimes, swear to bring her to justice.
Chapter 10: Justice Served
The Musketeers capture Milady and hold a secret trial, condemning her for her many crimes. She is executed, and Richelieu, though displeased, recognizes D’Artagnan’s skill and offers him a position in his own guards. D’Artagnan refuses, remaining loyal to the Musketeers.
Chapter 11: The Final Reckoning
With Milady gone and Richelieu’s schemes temporarily thwarted, the Musketeers return to Paris. D’Artagnan is promoted to lieutenant, while Athos, Porthos, and Aramis retire from service. The novel ends with their famous motto: “All for one, one for all!”
